Artist statement:
The paintings of Douglas Gray are unusual because they are rare, contemporary examples of History Painting. He has always been a keen student of history but in his painting he avoids the big events and often introduces humorous or even surreal elements into his work. Icarus can fall into the Firth of Forth, a philosopher can get stuck in a bog and Johnson and Boswell accidently time travel and land on Inchkeith in the 20th century. It may be history, but not as we know it. |
